On October 15, in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Research Institute of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a leading power battery manufacturer from mainland China, was officially inaugurated at Science Park. This marks the company’s sixth research and development center globally. Following its establishment, the institute plans to kick off 75 research projects and hire over 200 researchers. Additionally, it will collaborate with local universities to conduct strategic planning and foster deeper partnerships between industry and academia.
During the opening ceremony, Sunny Choi, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, expressed his enthusiasm about the increasing number of tech companies from both domestic and international backgrounds setting up in Hong Kong. He mentioned that over the past two years, the government has successfully attracted more than 100 promising and representative tech enterprises to establish or expand their operations in the region, which can be described as the “seeding phase” for Hong Kong’s innovation and technology development. With these companies now beginning to operate and grow in the city, it signals that the innovation landscape in Hong Kong is entering a “cultivation phase.”
Choi further stated that the government is committed to working closely with these companies to deepen the innovation ecosystem in Hong Kong and help them maximize their value. In the future, the government will provide comprehensive support in areas such as land, funding, and policy frameworks, ensuring that companies like CATL have ample room for development. He is confident that through collaborative efforts, Hong Kong’s innovation and technology sector will achieve remarkable success.

The city excels in collaborating with overseas universities, connecting with high-level talent, and building international platforms. The establishment of the research institute will serve as a critical platform for CATL to root itself in Hong Kong while aligning with global efforts to support the country’s new energy initiatives.
