The Hong Kong Jockey Club awards more than HK$17 million in prize money to outstanding athletes at the Paris Olympics

On October 13, the Hong Kong Jockey Club hosted the “2024 Paris Olympics Hong Kong Team Race Day” at the Sha Tin Racecourse. During this event, they held a ceremony to present checks as part of the “Outstanding Athlete Award Scheme,” rewarding athletes who secured medals or ranked between 4th and 8th at the Olympics with a total of HKD 17.625 million.

Among the attendees were several distinguished athletes, including gold medalists Cheung Ka-long and Jiang Min-huan, as well as swimming star Siobhan Haughey, who earned two bronze medals.

The Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Chan Kwok-kee, served as the guest of honor. In his remarks, he emphasized that the success of the Hong Kong delegation at the Paris Olympics was due to the collective efforts of the athletes, coaching teams, and the sports community, along with robust support from society. He assured that the government would continue to work with various sectors to bolster sports development, enabling athletes to reach their potential and excel on the international stage.

Jockey Club Chairman Dr. Anthony Chow extended heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the Hong Kong delegation. He expressed pleasure in awarding a total of HKD 17.625 million to the outstanding athletes through the scheme. Dr. Chow noted the transformative power of sports to change lives and unite communities, affirming the Jockey Club’s commitment to collaborating with various stakeholders to help Hong Kong athletes shine on the global sports stage.

Cheung Ka-long and Jiang Min-huan received cash rewards of HKD 6 million each, while Siobhan Haughey was awarded a total of HKD 3 million.

Cheung reflected on his achievement, stating that winning the gold medal was not solely his effort, but rather a culmination of the hard work of generations of athletes. He also expressed gratitude for the support from various sectors, including the government and the Jockey Club, acknowledging that it serves as a great encouragement for athletes.

Jiang described her feelings at winning the award as indescribable. She thanked the people of Hong Kong for their encouragement and support, noting that the award scheme is a significant boost for athletes.
