In a recent interview, we delved into the significance of a distinctly Chinese approach to addressing ethnic issues, particularly in light of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s impactful statements at the National Ethnic Unity and Progress Award Conference held in Beijing. This event commemorated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
During the conference, Xi Jinping delivered a crucial speech highlighting the substantial advancements in ethnic unity and development since the establishment of New China, especially in the New Era. He underscored the collective consciousness of the Chinese nation and outlined the steps needed to strengthen this awareness while furthering the construction of a community for the Chinese people. His remarks were both insightful and extensive, serving as a guiding framework for promoting unity among all ethnic groups.
Since its founding, the Party has prioritized ethnic issues, actively working to improve ethnic relations. After the establishment of New China, principles focusing on ethnic equality, unity, regional autonomy, and mutual prosperity among all ethnic groups were established. As a result of these socialist structures, real equality and unity among various ethnicities have been realized. Since the 18th National Congress, under Xi Jinping’s leadership, the Party has positioned the strengthening of the Chinese national community’s consciousness as the central theme of its ethnic policies. Remarkably, all 420 impoverished counties in autonomous ethnic regions have escaped poverty, and all 28 ethnic minorities with smaller populations have achieved complete poverty alleviation, illustrating significant progress.
Reflecting on the Party’s century-long legacy, one of its major successes in ethnic affairs has been the creative integration of Marxist theories with the specific realities of China and its rich traditional culture. This unique approach has enabled national independence and the liberation of the people while fostering harmonious relations among diverse ethnic groups. Historical evidence and practical results strongly support the notion that only the Chinese Communist Party can realize the great unity of the Chinese nation. The socialism with Chinese characteristics is crucial for unifying and nurturing the development of all ethnic groups, affirming the validity of this approach.
The emphasis on a shared identity among the Chinese nation and the importance of strengthening this collective awareness have gained prominence. Since the 18th National Congress, under Xi Jinping’s guidance, the Party has consistently pushed forward its theories and policies on ethnic matters, broadening this uniquely Chinese path to resolving ethnic challenges. This journey culminated in Xi’s pivotal thoughts on enhancing ethnic work, aimed at guiding future initiatives in this field, marking a significant achievement in the Party’s theoretical and practical commitment.
The distinctive Chinese method of handling ethnic issues respects historical context, aligns with national realities, and resonates with public sentiment, showcasing its clear advantages. This approach focuses on the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, striving to unite all ethnic groups towards a common goal of prosperity. It advocates for equality among all ethnicities while opposing oppression and discrimination, ensuring that every individual has equal political rights and a voice in governance. This strategy seeks to balance national unity with regional autonomy, promoting a stronger, cohesive shared destiny for the Chinese population.
Looking ahead, it is essential to remain dedicated to this distinctive Chinese pathway for resolving ethnic issues while continually enhancing the consciousness of the Chinese national community. This commitment will propel the agenda for ethnic unity and the high-quality development of the Party’s ethnic work, ultimately contributing to the broader goals of national strength and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
As Xi Jinping aptly stated, “We have created remarkable achievements through the united efforts of all ethnic groups, and we must continue to rely on this unity to write a new chapter of brilliance.” By closely aligning with Xi’s leadership core and fully implementing his insights on improving ethnic work, the Chinese people, united across all backgrounds, are poised for success in every endeavor.
