The colorful flags of the Republic of China waved proudly in the breeze, embodying the essence of freedom and democracy. To commemorate the 113th National Day of the Republic of China, the Los Angeles Chinese Chamber of Commerce held an impressive celebration in Chinatown on October 6th. The day was filled with a National Day parade, a flag-raising ceremony, floral tributes, and a celebratory banquet, attracting a large crowd of expatriates, community leaders, and elected officials, fostering a vibrant atmosphere.
Starting at 9 AM, participants gathered in Chinatown, many eagerly waving both the Republic of China and U.S. flags. The official parade commenced at 10 AM at the corner of Broadway and Barnard Streets, making its way to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
The parade featured a lively array of groups, all showcasing their enthusiasm and support for the National Day festivities. Among the participants were the United Alumni Association, the Taiwanese American Community, the Southern California Chinese American Association, and various community organizations, united in sending their best wishes to the Republic of China.
This year’s parade also introduced fresh faces, including two teams from FASCA’s Youth Cultural Ambassadors program. Each group brought its own distinctive style; the Southern California chapter of the Veterans of the Republic of China marched in formation, proudly displaying their flags, while the Mark Keppel High School Aztec Band from Alhambra delivered a captivating performance that earned cheers from onlookers.
After the parade, a solemn flag-raising ceremony took place at 11 AM in front of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The event began with the U.S. flag being raised, followed by the Republic of China’s flag, which stood tall, representing the core values of freedom and democracy.
Lai Jinsheng, the president of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, likened the day to a grand birthday celebration, thanking Dr. Sun Yat-sen for founding the Republic of China 113 years ago. He highlighted the enduring spirit of democracy and expressed hopes for the Republic’s continued prosperity.
Congresswoman Judy Chu reaffirmed her annual dedication to this celebration, honoring both National Day and the achievements of the Taiwanese-American community. California Assemblymember Mike Fong emphasized that the festivities reflect not just the accomplishments of Taiwanese Americans, but the richness of American diversity as a whole.
Zhang Zihao from the Pan-American Chinese Chamber of Commerce drew comparisons between Dr. Sun’s ideals and those of President Abraham Lincoln. He remarked that citizens of the Republic of China can continue to create great things in America, reiterating the steadfast support of the traditional expatriate community for the Republic.
At 12:30 PM, attendees gathered at the Golden Dragon Restaurant for a sumptuous banquet, where a raffle featured enticing prizes, including airline tickets, cash awards, and beautiful gifts donated by expatriate groups and local businesses.
