In a recent interview, author and public affairs commentator Reno Omokri shared his insights on President Bola Tinubu’s singular mention of Governor Siminalayi Fubara while calling for peace in Rivers State. Omokri contends that the President’s comments implicitly designate Fubara as the sole custodian of the people’s mandate in the state.
Omokri highlighted Fubara’s recent appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” where the Governor expressed disappointment over being singled out during a time of crisis. This, according to Omokri, raises important questions about Fubara’s leadership abilities. “Isn’t it clear to Governor Fubara that by referring to him alone, the President is affirming him as the only custodian of Rivers’ mandate and, by extension, the Chief Security Officer for the state until 2027?” Omokri posited.
He further challenged Fubara’s perspective, saying, “Who else could the President possibly mention? Are there multiple governors in Rivers State? His grievance suggests a troubling mindset, as if he perceives himself as operating under someone else’s authority, or sharing it with others.”
Omokri also reminded Fubara of his responsibilities as governor, emphasizing that if there are security threats at the state level, it’s typical for the President, as Commander-in-Chief, to reach out to the governor for support in fulfilling his duties. “This isn’t merely a matter of protocol; it’s a legal and constitutional obligation,” he insisted.
Adding historical context to his argument, Omokri stated, “There’s a clear legal and historical precedent for this. Fact-check me: President Olusegun Obasanjo referred only to Governor Joshua Dariye when addressing the crisis in Plateau State on May 18, 2004. Likewise, on October 7, 2024, President Joe Biden exclusively referenced Governor Ron DeSantis while providing emergency assistance for Hurricane Milton in Florida.”
Omokri expressed astonishment at Fubara’s apparent unawareness of these norms. “It’s incredible that Governor Siminalayi Fubara fails to understand this. His confusion regarding his own role could very well be contributing to the ongoing chaos in Rivers State. He needs to develop some self-awareness immediately. He can’t act like a child who looks around, expecting someone else to step forward when his name is called.”
In conclusion, Omokri advised, “You are the Governor. The President acknowledges that. Own your role. Rise up to the responsibilities of being the governor you are supposed to be. Don’t behave like someone freed from servitude but still acting as if they’re enslaved.”
