On September 15th, celebrated Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang dazzled audiences with a remarkable daytime fireworks display at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, kicking off the highly anticipated PST (Art & Science Collide) event. The spectacle attracted a considerable crowd, particularly from the Chinese community, who gathered to witness the stunning burst of colors light up the Los Angeles sky.
Cai’s performance highlighted his unique artistic approach, using organic and sustainable materials for his fireworks, which contrasts sharply with conventional pyrotechnics. Titled “We Are,” the event integrated a custom artificial intelligence model, “cAI™,” coordinating with over a thousand drones to create a breathtaking visual experience. This historic performance marked the first instance of combining daytime fireworks with drone formations in the United States.
Despite the free tickets, only 5,000 seats were available, leading to a quick sell-out. Many fans expressed their disappointment at missing out, while scalpers took advantage of the situation, reselling tickets for hundreds of dollars. Attendee Ms. Chen shared her excitement, stating, “I was lucky to snag a ticket. Being here was incredibly moving, especially the last few deafening explosions that felt like they lifted my soul.” Another participant, student Xiao Cheng, revealed she purchased her ticket from a scalper for $100, acknowledging the steep price but eager to experience the emotions of the fireworks live.
Katherine E. Fleming, chair and CEO of the Getty Trust, hailed the performance as “an unprecedented display,” marking it as the official opening of the PST art event.
Cai Guo-Qiang expressed his fascination with the rapid advancements in AI technology. He recounted how AI played a crucial role in preparing his speech, allowing him to express his thoughts fluently in English with a Minnan accent. Through “We Are,” he aimed to elevate AI beyond computer screens into a dynamic interaction with the audience, believing it has the potential to uncover the hidden wonders of the world.
The performance unfolded in five chapters, beginning with an introduction by football athlete David Lynch, while Cai orchestrated the rhythm and fireworks commands throughout the event. The stadium was enveloped in a vibrant display, transforming the sky into a dreamlike canvas, especially during two pivotal explosions that colored the sky in a breathtaking spectacle.
The event also attracted notable figures such as Wu Jianming, chairman of China Merchants Bank, documentary producer Wendi Deng, businessman Pan Shiyi, actress Zhang Jingchu, and forensic expert Dr. Henry Lee, all eager to be part of this historic celebration.
