China Academy of Information and Communications Technology announces the latest evaluation results of trusted open source in 2024

On October 16, the 2024 OSCAR Open Source Industry Conference was held in Beijing. During the event, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) unveiled its latest assessment results for trusted open source technologies and conducted a pre-release of the publication titled “100 Questions on Open Source System Development.”

Wang Xiaoli, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee at CAICT, emphasized the transformative role of open source in the digital economy. She remarked, “Open source represents a new mindset and model that injects endless vitality into the rapid growth of the global digital economy. From the perspective of technological innovation, the open-source innovation model effectively reduces marginal costs and fosters new tech advancements in our digital age. From an industry collaboration standpoint, open source bolsters the creation of a diverse and cooperative industrial system, reshaping the landscape of industry development. Additionally, it enhances social development by expanding cooperative opportunities and promoting the establishment of globally maintained digital public goods, thus contributing to the achievement of global sustainable development goals.”

CAICT has been dedicated to fostering a healthy open-source ecosystem through various initiatives, including establishing industry communities, formulating open-source governance standards, and providing open-source assessment services. These efforts aim to help businesses and organizations mitigate risks associated with open source, promote innovation and application of open-source technologies, and drive industry digital transformation. Aligning with goals of “security,” “compliance,” “sustainability,” and “health,” CAICT has rolled out trusted open-source assessments, creating a series of standards covering the entire open-source lifecycle. These standards evaluate areas like open-source governance, supply chains, projects, and communities.

At the conference, CAICT released the latest assessment results for trusted open source for 2024, which included evaluations of governance maturity, software product compliance, code repository capabilities, and community trust, among other new components. These insights provide vital references for the secure and compliant application and development of open-source technologies. According to the data shared, 141 products or projects from 14 categories of enterprises have successfully passed the trusted open-source assessment to date.

Moreover, CAICT and the People’s Daily Publishing House jointly announced a pre-release of “100 Questions on Open Source System Development.” This publication addresses critical issues in the development of open-source systems, including project construction, community nurturing, industry applications, risk management, enterprise administration, and local development. The initial writing phase has been completed, and the official release is anticipated by the end of the year.
