On October 12, 2024, the much-anticipated 10th Annual Guangdong (Yangshan) Mountain Climbing Event kicked off in Qinyuan, featuring the Yangshan Xianling Mountain Hiking and the Guangdong Peak Climbing Competition. This two-day event began with the climbing competition on the 12th, followed by the hiking activity on the 13th.

During the event, Lin Qiwen, the Deputy Secretary of the Yangshan County Committee and Minister of the Organization Department, shared his enthusiasm for the event. He noted that the competition offers both hiking enthusiasts and serious climbers a chance to experience unique routes while enjoying the stunning natural landscapes of the region.

Yangshan is renowned for its rich natural resources and beautiful ecological environment, earning titles such as “National Forest Tourism Demonstration County,” “Guangdong Province Demonstration County for Under-Forest Economy,” and “Guangdong Province Strong Tourist County.” Each year, its picturesque mountain and water vistas attract numerous tourists.

On the 12th, hundreds of climbing enthusiasts dashed off from the starting line in the Guangdong Peak Climbing Competition, tackling a challenging 15-kilometer course. Competitors, full of determination, traversed the scenic trails, sharing laughter and camaraderie along the way. Contestants from various regions raced against each other, showcasing their skills, with Gu Guofeng from Libu Town emerging as the champion in the men’s category.

“I’m part of a running group in Yangshan with over 100 members. We regularly train together and participate in various hiking and climbing events,” Gu Guofeng said. He emphasized that Yangshan is home to an abundance of nature lovers, and he has been participating in such activities for about seven or eight years. Gu hopes there will be more competitions like this in the future.

The event also featured a special food area, showcasing Yangshan’s local delicacies for participants and guests to enjoy for free. Dishes like tender Yangshan chicken, sweet barley soup, and freshly harvested watercress delighted many, drawing contestants to stop and sample the treats.

“I’m really happy to have come in first place today, especially since it’s my lunar birthday,” said competitor Xiong Ping from Shaoguan City. After the competition, she indulged in the local cuisine, finding the authentic flavors of Yangshan to be both delicious and unique.
