Originally opened in 1912 as a state exhibition hall, the California Science Center showcased California’s agricultural resources and related industrial products. After World War II, as science and technology evolved, the center shifted its focus toward public science education and was renamed the California Science Center in 1998. Following several expansions, it has become one of the largest science museums in the United States. Most of the main exhibition areas are open for free seven days a week, except on major holidays.
The center features multiple exhibits that cover a range of topics, including biology, physics, astronomy, and environmental science. One of the most popular sections is the Air & Space exhibition, which allows visitors to get up close with space vehicles and related artifacts. The Endeavour Space Shuttle, retired in 2011, was displayed here for years. Renowned as the world’s first reusable spacecraft, Endeavour completed 25 missions. It is currently being moved to the under-construction Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, where it will once again greet visitors once the new facility opens.
Life sciences are also a highlight at the center. In the second-floor exhibit “Life! Beginnings,” visitors can explore the processes of reproduction, development, and genetic transmission in humans and other organisms. An immersive womb space allows guests to step into a “sanctuary” that displays fetal specimens at various stages of life. Additionally, interactive displays invite visitors to independently discover the evolution of life and the diverse lifestyles of various species in nature.
The “Ecosystem” exhibit offers insights into the relationships between various forms of life and their environments through interactive displays and models of different ecosystems, including tropical rainforests, deserts, and aquatic environments. Visitors can manipulate these models to observe how various organisms adapt to their specific habitats. The center also showcases insects, plants, amphibians, reptiles, fossils, and specimens.
Another highlight of the center is the IMAX Laser Theater, featuring a massive seven-story screen that transports audiences into a virtual realm. With laser projection and 3D glasses, combined with advanced surround sound technology, viewers are treated to a unique digital journey. It’s important to note that tickets for IMAX films must be purchased in advance.
As a science exhibition venue, the center features various installations demonstrating principles of physics. From sound propagation to the effects of gravity, these interactive exhibits engage curiosity and provide many hands-on experimental opportunities for visitors. The facility also includes an environment and sustainability section that educates the public on how to live in a more eco-friendly manner.
