A passenger illegally brought 446,100 Hong Kong dollars into the country and was seized by the customs

On October 21, a significant incident was reported by the “Customs Release” WeChat account regarding a traveler at Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport. Customs officials intercepted a case of excessive currency being brought into the country, seizing a total of HKD 446,100, which is approximately CNY 404,400.

At around 3 PM, a female traveler passed through the customs “green channel” without declaring any items. However, customs officers noticed her visibly anxious demeanor. Upon further inspection, multiple bundles of cash in Hong Kong dollars were discovered on her person and in her handbag. The total amount was found to exceed the personal allowance for currency brought into the country.

Customs officials have issued a reminder that travelers bringing cash in foreign currencies exceeding the equivalent of USD 5,000 must declare it in writing to customs. Travelers are required to fill out a “Passenger Declaration Form for Items Brought in and Out of the Country” and to choose the appropriate declaration channel to ensure compliance with customs regulations.
