China- Once again solemnly calls on a few countries and organizations to lift illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe as soon as possible

During a press conference on October 25, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed a question regarding the commemoration of the “Anti-Sanctions Day” in Zimbabwe, which marks its fifth anniversary this year.

A reporter inquired, “Today is recognized as ‘Anti-Sanctions Day’ by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and Zimbabwe is holding events to call for the early lifting of what it terms illegal sanctions imposed by the West. What are China’s comments on this matter?”

Lin Jian responded, “The 39th SADC Summit in 2019 designated October 25 as ‘Anti-Sanctions Day,’ urging certain Western countries, including the United States, to lift their illegal sanctions against Zimbabwe. As the current chair of SADC and a direct party affected by these sanctions, Zimbabwe’s commemoration of this day is supported by China.

The illegal sanctions imposed by the U.S. and other Western nations have lasted over 20 years, severely infringing on Zimbabwe’s national sovereignty and undermining the development rights of its people. These actions have hampered deeper cooperation in the Southern African region and obstructed efforts towards collective development, representing a clear case of hegemonism. China consistently supports Zimbabwe’s stance against external interference and its pursuit of an independent development path. We once again call on a small number of countries and organizations to promptly lift their illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe. By taking responsible and pragmatic actions, they can help Zimbabwe develop its economy and improve the livelihoods of its people. China is prepared to work alongside African nations and the international community to assist Zimbabwe in maintaining its independence and sovereignty, and achieving stability and development.”
